Here is a 60 second sample of a NYC street - taken while waiting on a crosstown bus. Not quiet Molokai.

I have reached the end of week 4 and my 4,300 mile journey through part of the Continent. Now the pilot and friend Fr. Hamilton will take over the driving.
Here are a few highlights from Week 4.
Here are a few highlights from Week 4.
Stayed with friend Sherrill and her husband Lloyd for the first time - them and the 7 dogs (a little noisy when anyone arrived or suspiciously walked by. Sherrill and I met 40 years ago at Hunter College - we were both Theater Major, but met in an Eastern Religions class.

Got together with friend Larry, whom I met on an Indian reservation 44 years ago and we were roommates when I first moved to NYC in 1980. Hadn't seen Larry in about 30 years - we had a lot of fun catching up while eating at a Kosher Vegan restaurant in Manhattan. It was like no time had passed at all - Larry has worked all over Asia, including India, China and Russia. We shared a lot of stories.

This is my friend Greg, a retired ELCA pastor that I met when I first came to NYC in 1980. He was my pastor and friend through seminary and then friend. Greg's adopted daughter Emma (from Vietnam) is my Goddaughter. He has two other kids, Martha and Jake who actually spent the first couple of weeks (after birth) in my house in Brooklyn.
Franklin Shelter and newly minted Fr. John -->
My first call after ordination was 3/4 chaplain to a shelter for homeless men (city-run facility for 800 - in an old Armory building) in the South Bronx and 1/4 as pastor of Calvary Lutheran in the NE Bronx (they provided my housing) I spent 3 years at the shelter and 2 years at Calvary, my final year was at a church in Alphabet City (lower Manhattan) that had a shelter as well. |
This is Calvary's exterior today - that is Rev. Fredi (my seminary classmate and colleague/friend with whom I was ordained 32 years ago. She's been supplying there 15 years.
|
This is the interior of the church. Doesn't look too different except they found the front windows behind a piece of plywood. A drape hung there before.
|
Fredi was a year ahead of me at Union Seminary and my neighbor in the dorm. We were ordained together in 1990. Fredi is the Senior Chaplain for the VA in Philidelphia and regular supply at Calvary.
|
Elise was a year behind me at Union and also a neighbor in the dorm. She is currently the Executive Minister at Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan (home of Norman Vincent Peale) and teaches sociology at Lehman College (part of the City University system) - she has a PhD in Sociology.
